How do you increase the pressure in a hydraulic cylinder?

Pressure buildup in hydraulic cylinders is a dangerous phenomenon. In the operation of hydraulic cylinders, the basic rule is that the permissible pressure values must not be exceeded, not even for a short time. It must be ensured that no pressure peaks occur in the system, either caused by the pump or due to external mechanical influences. Otherwise, seals or cylinders could be damaged.

Pressure peaks resulting from highly dynamic movements must always be absorbed by separate buffering measures inside the cylinder (cushioning) or outside the cylinder (shock absorber). It must always be ensured that the momentum of the movement process is not dissipated in the end positions of the cylinder.

In special applications, such pressure peaks are unavoidable. For example, pressure peaks can occur during stamping processes, the levels of which are many times the system pressure. Ordinary hydraulic cylinders are not suitable for this; for such applications, there are stamping (block) cylinders that are specially designed for such extreme loads.

The gland on this hydraulic cylinder burst due to the pressure buildup. This was caused by a blockage between the rod side and the oil tank due to cold weather. The ambient temperature had dropped below the pour point of the hydraulic oil, so the oil could not flow.
