1. Single-Acting Cylinders

This type of cylinder is called single-acting cylinder because the ports at the head end of these cylinders work in a single direction. Once the fluid is pumped into the cylinder barrel, it extends the piston rod. An external force or load string is required to produce the return operation. The external energy is then used to discharge the fluid from the barrel to the reservoir. An example of a single-acting cylinder is a hydraulic jack.

Single-acting cylinders are divided into two types, spring extension type and spring return type, with the spring return type being the most commonly used type in single-acting cylinders.

2. Double-Acting Cylinders

Double-acting cylinders are designed with ports at both the head and rod ends to facilitate pumping of fluid. The ports will control the flow of fluid and facilitate bidirectional motion. When hydraulic fluid is pumped to the rod end, the piston rod will retract. On the other hand, pumping fluid to the head will help extend the piston rod. Applications for this type include lifting devices. Double-acting cylinders are mainly divided into differential type and synchronous type.

3. Tie-Rod Cylinders

Tie-Rod cylinders are most commonly used in manufacturing and industrial applications. Easy maintenance, assembly, and repair are some of the advantages of this type of cylinder. Use threaded steel rods to secure the end caps of tie rod cylinders. Tie rod end caps can be used to prevent fluid leakage.

5. Telescopic Cylinders

Telescopic cylinders can be single acting or double acting. This type of cylinder contains more than five pipes. This is a single acting or double acting cylinder. Telescopic cylinders contain more than five pipes. Each of these pipes is nested inside another pipe. These nested pipes or stages will get smaller in diameter.
