The double-acting hydraulic cylinder simulates a device that converts hydraulic energy into mechanical energy in the form of translational motion. Hydraulic oil pumped under pressure into one of the two cylinder chambers forces the piston to move and exerts force on the cylinder rod. Double-acting cylinders can transmit force and motion in both directions.

Interfaces R and C are mechanical translational throttles, corresponding to the cylinder rod and cylinder clamping structure respectively; interfaces A and B are hydraulic throttles, interface A is connected to converter A, and interface B is connected to converter B.

The energy through hydraulic port A or B is directed to the appropriate translational hydraulic mechanical converter block. The converter converts hydraulic energy into mechanical energy and takes into account the compressibility of the fluid in the cylinder chamber. The rod movement is limited by the mechanical translation hard stop block, so that the rod can only move between the cylinder heads.
