What is a telescopic hydraulic cylinder?

It is a special-acting cylinder or pneumatic cylinder that provides a longer output channel and a shorter compression retraction length. Sometimes called a multi-stage cylinder, it is a linear actuator that consists of a series of tubular rods called sleeves. The sleeves (usually four or five) are of decreasing diameter and nested inside each other. Once hydraulic pressure enters the cylinder, the largest sleeve (called the master sleeve or barrel) extends first. Once the barrel reaches its maximum stroke, the next sleeve (usually called a stage) begins to extend. This process continues until the cylinder reaches its last stage, called the plunger.

There are two types of telescopic hydraulic cylinders: single-acting and double-acting. Single-acting cylinders are by far the most common and use gravity or other external forces to retract the stages of the cylinder. Once pressure is released from the cylinder, the load force pushes the oil out of the system and the cylinder retracts.

While pneumatic telescopic cylinders exist, hydraulic power is more common, especially when moving heavy objects. Telescopic hydraulic cylinders typically have a retracted length of 20-40% of the fully extended length and are used when extension is required from a tight space. This extension capability produces longer working strokes than single-stage rod-type actuators. These capabilities, along with the ability to handle very heavy loads, make dump trucks, lifts, and garbage trucks the most common applications for telescopic cylinders.
