What is the most common hydraulic cylinder?

The three most common cylinder configurations are piston cylinders, telescopic cylinders, and ram cylinders. The design of each cylinder varies depending on the type of application, as shown below:
Piston cylinders are the most common type on the market and can be designed to be welded (welded cylinders) or not (tie rod cylinders). In addition, any piston cylinder is suitable for both single-acting and double-acting applications.
Telescopic cylinders are composed of at least two or more stages, capable of providing extremely long cylinder strokes (travel distances) from a compact cylinder retracted length. Like piston cylinders, telescopic cylinders can also be single-acting or double-acting.
Ram cylinders do not have a piston. Therefore, ram cylinders require a larger size hydraulic rod to produce the same force compared to piston cylinders. In addition, ram cylinders are only suitable for single-acting applications.
For all types of cylinders, key measurements include cylinder stroke, bore, and rod diameter. Stroke lengths vary from less than an inch to several feet or more. Bore diameters range from one inch to over 24 inches, and rod diameters range from 0.5 inches to over 20 inches. In practice, however, the choice of stroke, bore, and rod diameter may be limited by environmental, application, or design conditions.
For example, space may be too limited to accommodate the required cylinder stroke length. For tie-rod cylinders, increasing the bore size also means increasing the number of tie rods required to maintain stability. Increasing the bore or piston rod diameter is an ideal way to compensate for higher loads, but space considerations may not allow this, in which case multiple cylinders may be required.
