Single-Acting Hydraulic Cylinders

As the name implies, single-acting cylinders act in one direction, meaning that when oil flow is applied, the cylinder can only move in one direction. To return this cylinder to its original position, an external force must be applied to bring the oil back to the pump or system. Some cylinders rely on gravity to descend; a forklift is an example. Other cylinders, such as a standard jack cylinder, use an internal spring to return to the original position.

In a single-acting hydraulic cylinder, the fluid applies pressure to only one side of the piston. Whenever force is applied by a manual, pneumatic, or electric pump, the cylinder rod extends. This force pumps oil into the cylinder's ports, making jacking, pushing, and tensioning applications possible.

The most common action is in the extension direction, however there are many varieties of single-acting cylinders.

Double-Acting Hydraulic Cylinders

Double-acting hydraulic cylinders allow the pressure of the hydraulic oil to act on both sides of the piston. This allows for direct extension and retraction control without the need for a spring or external force to help it return to its original position.

This type of cylinder has two connections on either end of the cylinder body. Cylinders can extend or retract depending on which port the oil flow is delivered to.

In addition, there can be a variety of combinations of hydraulic pumps and valves connected to these cylinders, which allows for the control of specific movements or performance of the hydraulic system.

Advantages of Using Single-Acting Hydraulic Cylinders

Single-acting hydraulic cylinders are simple in construction and design and require fewer maintenance parts. For projects or machines that require efficient and reliable hydraulic cylinders, single-acting may be your best choice.

Here are some of the advantages of single-acting hydraulic cylinders:

Easier to control. Single-acting cylinders have only one port for hydraulic oil to enter for more precise and more stable pressure. Since the oil flows through only one hose, the complexity of the hydraulic system required for control is less.

Cheaper. Due to this type of single-acting characteristics, the overall cylinder assembly is simpler, which generally means less material, seals, and complexity that increase the cost. Since only one port is required instead of two, the purchase cost of pipes and valves is much lower. Single-acting hydraulic cylinders are less expensive to manufacture, install, and repair.

The use of single-acting hydraulic cylinders is very effective in equipment and various installations. It is mainly used by those who want to simplify an otherwise complex task.

Advantages of Using Double-Acting Hydraulic Cylinders

Double-acting cylinders offer a higher level of sophistication. Unlike single-acting cylinders, they can transmit hydraulic fluid or output force in both the extension and retraction directions. Additionally, double-acting cylinders can meet the needs of more unique industrial systems because they can provide both compression and tension without the aid of an external power source. As a result, they are the most commonly used type of cylinder on the market.

Here are some of the advantages of double-acting hydraulic cylinders:

High Versatility. Although double-acting hydraulics are not the best choice for tight spaces, they are incredibly versatile. Ports on both ends allow hydraulic power to be used in both directions, allowing for easily controlled push and pull motions.

Long life and low maintenance. Due to the nature of double-acting cylinders, most of the internal components are isolated from the environment and immersed in oil. Seals prevent contaminants from entering, which can degrade and wear the cylinder itself and the components in the hydraulic system that powers it. Immersing components in oil keeps parts lubricated, prevents water ingress, and maintains operating temperatures. Depending on the system, the oil can also carry contaminants that enter the cylinder and pass through filters
